The Winter Wonderland heads south, and there's plenty of bad weather on the way

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Early shivers: Snow has carpeted the dales near Killhope in Weardale in the North Pennines

This is the Winter Wonderland scene that greeted the early risers of County Durham today as snow moved south into England.

Three inches fell overnight in the northern Pennines, and the first icicles of winter raised the prospect of a big freeze.

While most of the UK was getting some respite today, more bad weather is being forecast, with gale force winds and more snow returning tomorrow and Friday.

Warnings of gales and heavy rain were also given in Wales, along with heavy rain and heavy snow in parts of the north west of England.

A severe warning of heavy rain was also issued in south west England.

Rachel Vince, Meteogroup weather forecaster, said: 'There is a deep low moving in from the north west bringing very strong and gusty winds across the whole of the UK.'
And the unsettled weather is predicted to continue for at least another fortnight.

By the end of the month there will be more settled, but colder weather, with mostly below average rainfall. Temperatures will be below average with increased risk of frost.

Meanwhile residents in Emsworth, Hampshire, were continuing their clean-up operation today in the wake of Monday night's heavy rainfall.

Fire and rescue crews from across the county were drafted in to help as 5ft floods swamped the town.

Storms caused havoc across the country, blocking roads, disrupting railways, flooding cellars and bringing traffic to a halt.

In a sign of the conditions to come over the festive season, Ladbrokes broke with tradition and was offering odds on a wet, rather than white, Christmas.

The bookmaker is offering 2/1 that it rains in London on Christmas Day, 9/4 in Manchester and 7/4 in Liverpool.
