The 2011 Dallas Mavericks may be the most overachieving team in NBA history. Throughout the regular season, there were many teams mentioned as possible NBA Champions: Lakers, Heat, Bulls, Celtics, Spurs and even the Thunder for Christ's sake. But the Mavericks were always just seen as also rans. And many people predicted that Portland would beat them in the opening round. Because after all, they were the one and done boys, being knocked out of the first round the last couple of years. But they shook the label of being soft and beat both the Heat and Lakers en route to this title.
What a great couple of days. First, Lebron's girl gets slammed by Rashard Lewis, then we find out he has 6 toes and now the Heat choke on their own bravado in this series. The Heat didn't just lose, they got dominated. They lost 3 in a row and 2 of 3 at home. Their defense, which played great all playoffs, failed them miserably in the last couple games of this series.. There was no answer for the Jason Terry-Dirk Nowitski pick and pop/roll, as both players scored at will, late in games.
But its not just Dirk's legacy that was sealed with this championship. You also have to feel good for Jason Kidd too. The guy is a first ballot Hall of Famer and arguably a top 5 point guard of all time. And now he is an NBA Champion.
PS- My very first thought when the clock was running down was how much better off the Cubs would be if Mark Cuban was able to buy them 2 years ago. Seriously, in a sport that has no salary cap, he would have a title in 3 years.
